Lago Lungern: I 5 Luoghi più Belli e Romantici

Lake Lungern is embedded in the mountains like a green-blue pearl, which makes the Swiss lake a paradise on earth. We show you the 5 most beautiful places to visit.

Fantastic Lake Lungern (Lungernsee)

Lake Lungern, also called Lungerersee, is a pearl in the canton of Obwalden and easily accessible from Lucerne or Meiringen. Formerly a natural lake, it has since become a reservoir to generate electricity. Despite the dam, its natural character still dominates. Similar to the Klöntalersee, the Lungernsee was probably formed by a landslide that dammed up the mountain water.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, this magical place is just right for you. Although the lake is easily accessible by car and lies directly on the road, there are countless spots here to unwind. From great viewpoints to swimming, everything is possible. In this article you will get to know five of the most beautiful and romantic places on Lake Lungern.

1). Lake Lungern Peninsula

The peninsula on Lake Lungern is a cosy place to switch off and unwind. With a view over the green-blue water and the beautiful mountains, this is one of my favourite places. What could be better than enjoying these moments on a free bench?

Incidentally, the peninsula is located just before Lungern, coming from Lake Sarnen.

2). Bürglen OW – cute village at Lake Lungern

Bürglen OW is an unknown place like in a Swiss picture book. The traditional houses, the chapel and the green Lake Lungern with its fantastic panoramic view give the village an incredible charm.

In Bürglen, by the way, there is a free lido for the warm summer months. The bathing area is a quiet place, but when the weather is nice, some people still come here. That’s why it’s especially recommended to come early then. In addition, the outdoor pool has a barbecue area and toilet facilities and offers the perfect mountain panorama.

3). Viewpoint Widen

Widen is probably the most beautiful viewpoint above Lake Lungern and is shared frequently, especially on Instagram. From Lungern, it’s a road up to the perfect photo spot, where you can enjoy the view of the lake, the mountains and also down into the valley towards Sarnen.

Since there are no specific parking spaces, it is important not to block the roads and rather park the car a little below. This is because the farmers drive through relatively often during their work.

4). Dundelbach Falls

The Dundelbach Falls are a multi-level waterfall on Lake Lungern and are particularly spectacular when the snow melts or after a long period of rain. They are easily accessible by car or by foot. During long dry spells, the waterfalls may not carry much water.

If you want to experience a great hiking adventure, you can take the cable car near the Dundelbach Falls to Turren. From there you can hike in the direction of the Brienzer Rothorn.

5). Lungern

Lungern is the highest village in the Sarneraatal and a last stop before the Brünig Pass. It is a beautiful village with a traditional appearance. Since the bypass road has been open, Lungerns car traffic has been strongly reduced.

By the way, there is a swimming pool, the so-called Seepark Lungern. If you like to have fun or enjoy cooling off, this is the place for you. In addition to a mini-golf course, the Seepark also has a lake slide, a diving tower and even a water trampoline. A small restaurant is also open when the weather is nice.

Did you know that water level of the lake was once artificially lowered? In 1836, the majority of the population wanted to lower the lake to gain valuable land for the farmers. This practice was common in this region, because between today’s Lake Sarnen and Lake Lungern there was once a third lake called Lake Giswil. But with the construction of the power plant, the 170 ha of land that were gained were lost again only about 85 years later.

If you want to visit Lake Lungern in a day trip, it is just 1.5 hours from Zurich Switzerland.
