Text and pictures by Marc Gottwald
Switzerland has TOP tourist attractions to offer. From castles to cities to the 4000-metre mountains, there is a lot to see. This guide should inspire you to discover the most beautiful places in Switzerland. I will not only show you the well-known spots, but also some insider tips towards the end of the article.
If you would like to discover more places, then I recommend our free e-book with the 111 most beautiful places in Switzerland.
Gruyères – Top Tourist Attraction in Western Switzerland
Surrounded by the Fribourg Alps and Lac de Gruyère, the medieval town is a top attraction. A walk through the Swiss town alone is worthwhile. If you want, you can visit the castle. But let’s be honest with you. It already looks fantastic from the outside.
Another tip is to visit the Gruyère AOP cheese production. If you love cheese, you’ll get your money’s worth on the tour.
Tip: Not only cheese fans will be happy in Gruyères. Swiss chocolate fans’ hearts also beat faster as soon as they visit the “Maison Caillier” chocolate factory in Broc. There is as well a tour where delicious chocolate can be tasted at the end.
Lauterbrunnen
Lauterbrunnen in the Bernese Oberland is a sight to behold as a whole village. Practically every corner is beautiful and invites you to enjoy it. No wonder the Swiss village is one of the most popular photo subjects on Instagram.
But if you want a bit of peace and quiet, walk a little way out of the village and you’re practically all alone. You can practically always see the Staubbach Falls, the highest waterfall in Switzerland.
Hiking tip: If you love hiking with a panoramic view, you should take the train to Wengen and start the hike to Lauterbrunnen from there. A gigantic view of the Lauterbrunnen valley awaits you.
Grindelwald – one of the most famous places in Switzerland
Grindelwald is very close to Lauterbrunnen. Here you will find wellness hotels, diverse excursions and the most beautiful hikes in Switzerland. A top attraction is the Cliff Walk at Grindelwald First.
Also a popular place for tourists is the Bachalpsee, which can be reached in a 30-minute hike from First. But there are many more highlights, and I’ll tell you one now.
Insider tip Grindelwald: You can take the post bus to Grosse Scheidegg or, if you like, go hiking. Beautiful mountain lakes await you around the summit of the pass. Please always stay on the paths, as you are in a nature reserve.
Mürren
It’s not a secret that Mürren is one of my favourite places in Switzerland. That’s why it’s another sight I recommend even before the famous Matterhorn in Zermatt or the Rhine Falls in Schaffhausen.
Mürren offers you an incredible view of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. In good weather and at sunset, the imposing Swiss mountains glow dark red. A true spectacle in the Bernese Oberland. The journey takes place via Stechelberg or Lauterbrunnen.
Insider tip Mürren: I’ll let you know a great insider tip. Some people will probably take the cable car from Stechelberg to Mürren. Then you come to a village called Gimmelwald. Like Mürren, Gimmelwald has a beautiful appearance. And flowers bloom here until October.
Matterhorn – the Toblerone mountain as a tourist attraction to visit in Switzerland
Of course, the Matterhorn cannot be missing from the list of Switzerland’s top attractions. And yes, there is something magical about the mountain. The first time I was in Zermatt, I really felt the power. Zermatt is a real place of power when you’re a bit away from the crowds.
On the one hand, there is the 5 Lakes Trail. However, this is very well frequented, even during the week. I therefore recommend taking the cable car to the “Trockener Steg” station and walking from there towards Schwarzsee. With the right wind and light conditions, you have the perfect reflection of these Swiss mountain lakes.
Rhine Falls Schaffhausen – the biggest waterfall in Europe
The Rhine Falls near Schaffhausen must also appear among Switzerland’s top attractions. After all, it is the largest and arguably the most beautiful waterfall in Europe.
If you want, you can take a boat ride directly to the waterfall. This is very impressive and worthwhile. You can get there either by train from Schaffhausen or Zurich. And also by car.
Tip: The closest you can get to the waterfall without a boat trip is to take the lift at Schloss Laufen in the direction of the Rhine Falls. It’s simply impressive to see the masses of the water cascading down.
Stein am Rhein
Stein am Rhein is one of the most beautiful towns and tourist attractions in Switzerland. The houses from the Middle Ages, the town towers and the Rhine are great tourist attractions. If you want, you can take a boat from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein after the Rhine Falls.
There are many activities to do in Stein am Rhein, such as walking, going for a bike ride or simply relaxing on the banks of the Swiss town.
The most beautiful walk in Stein am Rhein: this one leads from the old town to the monastery island. It’s an insider tip that takes you along the banks and a long wooden bridge into a natural paradise. The island is only 500 metres from the German border.
Lucerne
If Lucerne wasn’t in our guide of the top 50 tourist attractions in Switzerland, you could stop reading this article right now. Because the city on the Reuss and Lake Lucerne is a dream.
The old town, which was built in the Middle Ages, is particularly recommendable. Those who love shopping will also get their money’s worth. Thanks to the many tourists, watch lovers in particular will find almost every model.
Excursion tip Lucerne: If you have a little more time and are ready for a spontaneous adventure, you should definitely take a boat trip on Lake Lucerne. Why not combine the trip with a trip up a mountain? Then take the boat to Vitznau and change from there to the Rigi railway.
Basel
Having grown up in the Basel region, I have many fond memories of this city. That’s why I highly recommend visiting Basel at least once. Especially worthwhile are the walks through the alleys of the old town.
But the Rhine swim in summer (a possible entry point for the Rhine swim is the Tinguely Museum), where you can then float in the river for about 30 minutes, is a real highlight. Enjoying and relaxing on the banks of the Rhine is also something that the people of Basel love to do and you will certainly enjoy it too.
It is particularly beautiful on the Kleinbasel side, where you have a permanent view of Basel’s old town.
Insider tip Basel: The Landesstelle Basel is the insider tip in Basel, or at least it used to be. Here you can enjoy the finest drinks and food in bars and restaurants while enjoying the view of the Rhine in the sunshine. From here you can even walk to the border triangle (Switzerland, Germany and France).
Thun
With the Aare, Lake Thun, the gigantic castle, the medieval houses and the mountain panorama of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the city of Thun is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. A highlight are the surfers at the Mühleschleuse, who show off their skills.
But the castle in Thun also makes the city one of the tourist attractions of Switzerland! From here you have a perfect view over the old town and the Bernese Alps.
For the adventurous: In summer it is a great highlight, the “Aarebötle”. You can travel from Thun to Bern in about 4 hours by rubber boat. There are several places to get on. The longest stretch of the Aarebötle is when you get on at Thun Schwäbis. There is even a service for a few francs that will pump up the rubber boat for you (in summer there can be long queues). The most dangerous place is at the railway bridge in Üttigen, where you have to cross the bridge on the right-hand side. For more details, I recommend studying the guide under this link. Pay attention: Since 2020, it is mandatory to have life jackets with you.
Zurich – must tourist attraction in Switzerland with the old town & the lake
Zurich may not be the capital, but it is the largest city of Switzerland. Accordingly, there is a lot to see and experience. If you like shopping, you’ll get your money’s worth in Bahnhofstrasse and “beim Viadukt”.
Vegans and vegetarians eat the best meals at the Hiltl. And nature lovers can enjoy their time in one of Zurich’s parks. If you would like to learn more about the city and its attractions, you can find more inspiration here.
Lake Zurich
To classify Lake Zurich as a tourist attraction is almost degrading. Because the lake has so much to offer that you could write an entire travel guide about it alone. But if I had to name the most beautiful places, it would be by far the walk from Rapperswil to Pfäffikon.
Because with almost 1 kilometre it is the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland. And definitely a great sight near Zurich. The hike takes 1h and 10 minutes and offers a great panorama.
Geneva – famous for Swiss watches
The cosmopolitan city of Geneva is another tourist attraction of Switzerland! Besides Zurich, it is the most famous city in Switzerland. With the Jet d’Eau, the lakeside paths along Lake Geneva, the many restaurants and famous luxury hotels, Geneva has a lot to offer.
So if you make a day trip to Geneva, you have a lot to experience: The headquarters of the UN and the International Red Cross, various parks, walking in the alleys or swimming in the lake are just a few of the many things you can do in Geneva.
Another tip is a boat trip on Lake Geneva. I have already travelled from Geneva to Nyon and can only recommend the trip with the destination Nyon.
Lake Geneva (Lac Leman)
As already mentioned, Lake Geneva (or in french Lac Leman) is worth seeing. But similar to the Lake Zurich to summarise the Swiss lake simply as one attraction is difficult and not correct. Because there is so much to experience.
How about the Lavaux wine terraces? Combined with the view over Lake Geneva and the small medieval villages, this region is picturesque.
One of these great villages on Lake Geneva is St.Saphorin. After a tour, the hike through the wine terraces starts from here.
Lausanne
Lausanne is hailed by some as the most beautiful city on Lake Geneva (Lac Leman). Whether it is or not, you’ll have to make up your own mind. But there’s no denying that Lausanne is a top tourist attraction.
The place is particularly beautiful in spring. That’s when the Tulip Festival decorates Lausanne’s lakeside. This is very easy to reach from the station by Switzerland’s only subway.
If you go to the old town, charming alleys and great restaurants and cafés await you. Lausanne is definitely worth a visit.
Montreux
Montreux is a Swiss town where countless writers and poets have stayed thanks to its infinite beauty. Tourists from all over the world come to Montreux, among other things to see the Chillon Castle. But it is also worth taking the train from Montreux to Rochers-de-Naye to enjoy the view over Lake Geneva.
When I’m in Montreux, I like to take the Montreux-Oberland train towards Gstaad. Because on this trip you see countless attractions and places in a short time.
Spring tip for Montreux: The daffodils of Montreux – everyone starts dreaming here. The daffodil fields above Montreux at Les Avants are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the moment. It is advisable to arrive by train as there are limited parking spaces available.
Rhine Gorge
The Rhine Gorge are world-famous, but I have never seen many people. This is probably because I have avoided the well-known (but very great) viewpoint Il Spir until now.
Not too bad: the Rhine Gorge has so many beautiful vantage points that people also spread out well. A hike through the gorge is also very impressive. You can even see chamois if you are lucky.
Insider tip Rhine Gorge. A great viewpoint away from the crowds can be found at the “Isla Davos”, which lies between Versam and Bonaduz. It’s a very biodiverse area, so chances are you’ll see rare species like orchids.
Iseltwald
What was once an insider tip has become an Instagram hotspot and one of Switzerland’s tourist attractions. The municipality of Iseltwald on Lake Brienz is a jewel. Not only because of the Seeburg Castle in Iseltwald, but also because of the charming Bernese wooden houses and the panoramic views of the Brienzer Rothorn and Augstmatthorn. Nevertheless, there are very few people in Iseltwald outside of the summer. Iseltwald is also very easy to reach from Interlaken by boat, train or car.
Tip Iseltwald: You can take an idyllic hike along the Iseltwald lakeside path to the Giessbach waterfalls. The waterfall has 14 steps, which then flow into Lake Brienz.
Gstaad
Gstaad is known worldwide from the Indian Bollywood films. Besides the wellness hotels and luxury hotels as well as its own airport. Gstaad is an ideal base for excursions both in summer and winter.
Not far from Gstaad is one of the most beautiful natural paradises in the canton of Bern. In a steep hike peppered with rare orchid species, you will find the beautiful Walopsee above Boltigen, a mountain lake that is definitely a jewel. If you are really fit, you can hike from Walopsee to Kaiseregg and from there to Schwarzsee.
Lake Oeschinen – one of the most beautiful lakes & top tourist attractions in Switzerland
Lake Oeschinen is one of the most beautiful lakes and a top tourist attraction in Switzerland. A mountain lake framed by mighty rock faces. The view of the Upper and Lower Oeschinen glaciers and the Doldenhorn and Fründen glaciers is spectacular. It was formed naturally by a large rockfall. Today, Lake Oeschinen attracts thousands of people to the region. The lake is not only a paradise for resting, but also for hiking. This makes it a Top tourist attraction for your Switzerland to-do list.
Tip Oeschinensee: A beautiful panoramic hike is the hike from Oeschinensee to the Blüemlisalphütte SAC, where you can spend the night. Then continue in the direction of Griesalp. The mountain hut offers delicious food and the view over the Blüemlisalp glacier is phenomenal. Although we only stopped for refreshments, the hike from Kandersteg to Griesalp is very long for a day hike at around 10 hours.
Aletsch Glacier – the biggest glacier of the Alps
Welcome to the Aletsch Glacier in the canton of Valais. It is the largest glacier of the Alps and therefore one of the most popular tourist attractions of Switzerland. With the cable car you have various possibilities to reach the Aletsch Glacier comfortably. You can get to the viewpoints of the glacier from Riederalp, Bettmeralp or Fiesch.
Tip: The most impressive view over the Aletsch Glacier is from the Eggishorn. From there you can see not only the Grosser Aletsch Glacier, but also the Mittelaletsch Glacier and the Konkordiaplatz.
Alpstein and the Seealpsee – Top tourist attraction in Eastern Switzerland
The Alpstein is a mountain range in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden and Innerrhoden as well as St.Gallen. I would like to introduce you to the Lake Seealpsee as a tourist attraction in the region of Eastern Switzerland.
Together with the Fälensee and the Sämtisersee, the Seealpsee is one of the three lakes of the Säntis massif and probably the most famous Instagram subject of the Alpstein region. Despite the steep path, it is literally overrun in summer. It is one of the lakes I would do in spring and autumn, in summer either only in the morning or leave it out altogether.
The reflections of the lake are particularly great photo subjects.
Appenzell – must visit tourist attractions for town loverws
The pretty village of Appenzell has long been known internationally. Is it the cheese or the beautiful houses? Probably both! The architecture in Appenzell is very special and shows its peak in this small town. The little town is one of Switzerland’s top attractions.
Not far from Appenzell is the Appenzeller Schaukäserei (Appenzell Show Dairy), a tourist attraction in Switzerland that is very worthwhile. The museum is great for children, but I have this tip for adult gourmets: buy the fresh Appenzell raclette cheese at the show dairy. This was probably the best raclette cheese I have ever eaten. Note: You can also find Appenzeller raclette cheese in Migros. This is as well good, but the quality is not comparable with the cheese from the show dairy shop.
Einsiedeln
The monastery town of Einsiedeln is also one of Switzerland’s top attractions. The fact alone that it is home to the largest monastery in Switzerland must put it on every to-do list. The sky pictures and drawings in the building are extremely impressive.
But the peaceful town with its cafés and restaurants also has a lot to offer in terms of quality of life. By the way, you can start your perfect hiking adventures from Einsiedeln. How about the Drüesberghütte? Of course, the Sihlsee is also a perfect destination for those who like to take it a little easier.
Klöntalersee
Lake Klöntal in the canton of Glarus is one of the best places to visit in Switzerland. Framed by imposing mountains, the Swiss lake is one of the top attractions near Zurich.
If you want, you can walk around the lake. Note, however, that there is a road on one side. In summer you can also take the bus back. In winter there is no public transport.
If you love camping, then the “Klöntalersee Camping” is absolutely recommended.
Jöriseen – most beautiful lakes in Switzerland
Probably one of the most beautiful hikes in Switzerland, if not the most beautiful! I can highly recommend the unique Jöriseen circular hike, which takes around 5 hours and is only for experienced hikers.
The different colours of the lakes are particularly impressive, making them a top attraction in Switzerland. These are due to the different water access (surface water and glacier water). The Flüela Pass and the Jöriseen lakes are easily accessible by post bus from Davos.
Tarasp Castle
Tarasp Castle near Scuol is a castle and a great place to visit in Switzerland. It towers proudly over the landscapes of the Grisons. Although built in the 11th century, it is still very well preserved today. This is because the inventor of “Odol” mouth spray bought the castle at the beginning of the 20th century and renovated it.
There are even guided tours in the castle. This is because the castle now belongs to the Engadine artist, who has turned Tarasp Castle into an attraction for art and museum lovers. A Swiss museum with a lot of charm and innovation.
Insider tip Tarasp Castle: Tarasp Castle, which you can even see from the train journey to Scuol, is a great photo subject. Especially in the evening hours, you have the best light to take photos from the village.
Rosenlaui
The Klein Wellhorn stands proudly in the landscape while the river, peppered with glacier water, flows before it. Welcome to the Rosenlaui Valley – probably the most beautiful valleys and one of my favourite places in and tourist attraction in Switzerland.
It is a valley for connoisseurs, romantics, poets and all those who love nature. Although the Rosenlaui valley is becoming more and more popular, it is still an insider tip.
Tip Rosenlaui: The Rosenlaui glacier gorge is a tip not to be missed if you are in the region. Here you can feel the power and energy of the water in a romantic gorge. The tour, which takes about 45 minutes, is also a great destination for a family outing.
Bettmeralp – a place where Swiss people make vacation
Bettmeralp, the mountain village above Fiesch in the canton of Valais. Hard to beat for romance, it is a dream for every skier or hiker. In the morning and evening hours, the well-known Instaspot with the Bettmeralp chapel is recommended for a good photo.
In the evening the village is very quiet. Then you can enjoy a meal in one of the delicious restaurants. And the sunset.
Insider tip Bettmeralp: Another dream for photographers and connoisseurs is the Villa Cassell on Bettmeralp. Formerly the residence of a rich Englishman, it was converted into a hotel and taken over by Pro Natura in 1976.
Leukerbad
Leukerbad is known for its thermal baths and wellness hotels and the natural hot springs, which has made Leukerbad the most famous wellness resort in Switzerland. Even the Romans went to the hot springs in Leukerbad. The village is not only known for its wellness, but also for its wonderful hikes. Probably the best known is on the Gemmi Pass in the direction of Kandersteg.
Did you know this: A Swiss-wide phenomenon: Have you ever seen warm water flowing from a fountain? Then you have to go to Leukerbad. The water flows into the village from a total of 65 thermal springs.
Toggenburg
Would you like to go on a great panoramic hike in Toggenburg? Then there are lots of attractions waiting for you on this hike. From Wildhaus you hike to the Gamplüt mountain station, where you can either enjoy a picnic with a view of the Churfirsten and the Säntis or stop off at the mountain restaurant at the cable car station. The hike continues to Chüehboden and then back to Alt St.Johan or Unterwasser.
Insider tip Toggenburg: In about an hour from Chüegboden you can reach Gräppelensee, one of the most beautiful lakes in Eastern Switzerland. At this unknown mountain lake you have a dream view and can even go swimming.
Devil’s Gorge in Andermatt
Did you know that a place in the middle of Switzerland belongs to Russia? The monument in the Schöllenen Gorge near Andermatt, which is also called the Devil’s Gorge.
Battles with many deaths took place here. Today it’s more peaceful back and forth. Nevertheless, the Devil’s Gorge is really wild and a great Swiss sight. Only insiders know that it is worth taking a few more steps in the direction of Göschenen. Because besides a few other beautiful waterfalls, there are often chamois to marvel at (especially in spring and autumn).
Maderanertal
What peace and idyll you will find in the Maderanertal, hidden in the canton of Uri! An insider tip in Switzerland and one of the most beautiful valleys! The Maderanertal is a natural paradise and very popular for hikers and bikers.
By car, you drive to the cable car station to Lake Golzern. You can park your car there free of charge. And this 30-minute walk is an absolute dream and unique in Switzerland.
Insider tip Maderanertal: The hike to the Hüfihütte SAC is an insider tip for experienced hikers in the Maderanertal. An unforgettable panoramic view of the surrounding glaciers and mountains awaits you.
Klausenpass
The canton of Uri has many insider tips to offer. For me, it is the most underrated canton in Switzerland. The Klausen Pass is one of the better-known places of the canton, but there are many great natural gems on the route to the pass. That makes it a top tourist attraction to visit in Switzerland.
Once on the pass, you can hike to a still relatively unknown glacier lake in just 45 minutes. In summer, you can see impressive ice floes breaking off here. You get the feeling of being in the Antarctica.
But the Klausen Pass is also well suited for a ride.
Eggberge
One of the real insider tips in the canton of Uri is the Eggberge above Lake Lucerne. You can take the cable car from Flüelen to the mountain. The mountain village with its chalets is beautiful and idyllic. And from here you can start a hike to a top viewpoint.
The Swiss hike, which takes about 3 hours, goes in the direction of Biel-Chinzig. Thanks to the unique view on the Hüenderegg, this place is a Swiss landmark. Delicious restaurants also await you. You can take the cable car from Biel-Chinzig back down to the valley.
Seelisberg
Seelisberg is also a village in the canton of Uri and is one of the most beautiful pearls near Lucerne.
A hike takes you to the Rütli, the place where Switzerland was founded 1291. Here you can theoretically also continue by boat to save yourself the steep climb.
For the very sporty, there is the hike from Seelisberg to the Niederbauen Kulm.
Ronco sopre Ascona
The region around Ascona and Locarno is beautiful. But have you ever heard of Ronco sopre Ascona? The village is a tourist attraction to visit in Switzerland especially in spring when the flowers start to bloom. Combined with the palm trees and the lake view, the place is a jewel in Ticino.
Tip: You can combine your visit in Ronco sopre Ascona with a boat trip to the Brissago Islands. Here you will find the largest botanical garden in Ticino.
Montre Brè
It is Lugano’s local mountain and offers a fantastic view over the Swiss city, Lago di Lugano and the Alps. From Lugano, you can easily reach the Swiss mountain by funicular. At the top, there is a restaurant and a view to enjoy.
However, the 30-minute walk from Monte Brè to “Brè sopra Lugano” is particularly recommendable and for me the real tourist attraction. The small Ticino village is also well worth seeing and a tour is highly recommended.
Swiss National Park
The Swiss National Park in Graubünden is the oldest national park in Europe. And the only one in Switzerland. But it is a must to classify this park as a “Swiss attraction”. Because here you can still really experience wild nature.
For example, there are many edelweiss to observe in the months of July and August. Of course, it is forbidden to pick the strictly protected flower or to leave the paths in the national park.
Tip Lake Paradise: One of the biggest insider tips in Switzerland are the lake districts of Macun. The challenging hike through the national park takes you to 23 larger and smaller lakes that have their origin in the glacier.
Melchsee-Frutt
Yes, the beautiful Melchsee-Frutt is quite crowded in summer. Nevertheless, you can also find peace and quiet here away from the tourist hotspots and the lake hikes. You still don’t have to miss out on the lakes.
A great hike is, for example, to the Blausee and then on to the Wit Ris, where you enjoy an incredible one of the best mountain panoramas in Switzerland, on mountains such as the Jungfrau, the Finsteraahorn or the Wetterhorn. What a beautiful place.
Tip Melchsee: Melchseefrutt is a place with various hotels for overnight stays. If you are looking for the best “Wellness hotels Switzerland”, you will find it on Melchseefrutt. How about the Frutt Logde, for example?
Seebergsee
The Seebergsee lake in the canton of Bern is a great place in Switzerland for anyone who enjoys mountain lakes and tranquillity. Well, by now the lake is quite well known. That means a lot of people come here at the weekend.
The good news, however, is that few people find their way to the lake during the week. Seebergsee is an ideal starting point for hikes. For example, there is a secret karst landscape to discover.
But if you only want to swim in the lake or eat something in the restaurant, you will also be happy at Seebergsee.
Chellenchöpfli
Now the journey takes us to the top attractions in north-western Switzerland. Namely to Chellenchöpfli, the highest point in the canton of Baselland. The mountain is well-known among the local population, but otherwise this place is still very unknown in Switzerland.
A hike takes about 1.5 hours from the Wasserfallen mountain station to Chellenchöpfli. From there you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Solothurn and Basel-Land Jura. On a good day, you can even see the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau or Mont Blanc in France.
Wildenstein Castle
Another excursion tip in Baselland and also nearby is Wildenstein Castle. It is one of the most beautiful castles in Switzerland. This attraction not only has a pub to offer at weekends, but is also located in a natural paradise.
There are oak trees which are more than 600 years old. Or just 10 minutes from the castle, an idyllic waterfall, the Sormattfall.
Lake Aegeri
Lake Aegeri is a great place in Switzerland above the city of Zug. It can also be reached from Zurich in around 45 minutes, which makes it a beautiful Swiss attraction. You can do more than just swimming in the lake.
It can also be discovered on foot in a leisurely hike from Unterägeri to Morgarten. But there are also swimming opportunities in summer. Furthermore, various delicious restaurants around Lake Aegeri await you.
Lake Wägital
But not only Einsiedeln and the Sihlsee are high on the list of tourist attractions in Switzerland. Lake Wägital in Canton Schwyz is also a top destination. The lake can be hiked around in 3 hours and is also ideal for families.
But if you want, you can also start great hikes from Innerthal into the mountains, such as the “Bockmattli” or the “Gross Aubrig”. Lake Wägital can also be reached in less than an hour from Zurich.
Grosser Mythen
When you drive along Lake Lucerne, two large mountains stand out. They are the Grosser Mythen and the Kleiner Mythen. While the smaller of the two is very difficult to climb, the Grosser Mythen is a real magnet.
In summer, people flock to the mountain as early as half past three in the morning to watch the sunset at half past five. The view over the Swiss mountains is indescribably beautiful. But in summer it can get very hot through the day. Also, at weekends there are sometimes so many people that it is better to do without this hike then. However, this shows that the Grosser Mythen is one of the top attractions and places of Switzerland.
Lago Bianco & Alp Grüm
While we’re on the subject of sunrise hikes, I can recommend another one. The one-hour hike from Ospizio Bernina along Lago Bianco to Alp Grüm.
Although Lago Bianco is a water reservoir, nothingexcept the power station reminds you of it. The glaciers and the view of the highest mountain in Graubünden (Piz Bernina) are a variety of attractions to see. If you like, you can also hike on from Alp Grüm to Lagh da Caralin.
Alpe San Romerio
Another insider tip is the Alpe San Romerio. The small alp with the more than 1000-year-old church is the sight par excellence. An ultimate photo subject. And here you can even spend the night in summer and enjoy regional food in the restaurant.
The Alpe can be reached by foot from Poschiavo or in about half an hour from the nearest post bus stop. A true place of strength, I can promise that.
Entlebuch
The UNESCO World Heritage Entlebuch is a picture book region. With the most beautiful hikes through untouched moorland, you can find rare species in the Entlebuch. You can also drive from Sörenberg to the famous Brienzer Rothorn.
If you want to discover the exciting history of the moors, you should definitely visit the moor in Finsterwald. You will get your money’s worth on a walk through a dreamlike forest with high moor lakes.
A sight for sweet lovers: if you’re in the Entlebuch, a visit to the Kambly factory shop is a must. Free tastings from over 50 delicious biscuit varieties and shopping at heavily discounted prices make the Kambly world in Trubschachen a highlight for families, couples, singles, young and old – in short: for everyone.
Seerenbach Falls
Have you ever heard of the Seerenbach Falls? The waterfall with a total of 3 stages is, together with the Staubbach Falls, the highest waterfall in Switzerland. The middle step measures around 300 metres, and the waterfall is about 600 metres high in total.
While there is sometimes no more water in summer, the Seerenbach Falls are a sight to see, especially in spring. Because then, together with the second waterfall, the Ringquelle, thousands of litres of water flow per second. All thanks to the melting snow.
