Places to visit in Graubünden, the South-Eastern part of Switzerland
-
Lagh da Val Viola – a hidden place in the Grisons Alps of Switzerland
The Val da Camp near Poschiavo in the Grisons has a lot to offer. And yes, I find it one of the most picturesque valleys in Switzerland. The Lagh da Val Viola is right up there on the list of Switzerland’s most beautiful excursion destinations. Filled with crystal clear blue-green water and surrounded by larches, this is one of the magical places I always love to return to. A refreshing swim in the ice-cold water is highly recommended!
Hiking enthusiasts beware. It is possible to reach the Lagh da Val Viola and Lagh da Saoseo by bus (reservation strongly recommended). However, it is worth the 2.5h hike through the Val da Camp to the two mountain lakes. This biodiversity, idyll and nature remains unforgettable.
2. Lagh da Saoseo
The canton of Graubünden also many lakes, most of them hidden gems. But connoisseurs call this place the most beautiful lake in Switzerland, the Lagh da Saoseo in the Val da Camp (right next to the Lagh da Val Viola) A few years ago still an insider tip, on warm days many people already come there. For photographers this place is a paradise!
We recommend arriving during the week, if possible, to avoid larger crowds. The lake has a completely different effect when it is quiet and idyllic than when there are crowds of people. Since it is a nature reserve with many rare species, we ask you to enjoy the lake in silence.
3. Davos Sertig
Davos is famous for the World Economic Forum (WEF). Also many tourists flock to Davos especially in winter for skiing. But this place definitely has much more to offer than skiing, WEF or a day trip. What is surprising now: for me it is one of the regions in Switzerland with the most insider tips and beautiful destinations. One of them is the Walser village Davos Sertig, located in a side valley called Sertig valley. The Walsers were allowed to live in Graubünden only away from the main routes for free, that’s why all Walser villages are hidden in valleys. But let’s be honest, who would say no in this beautiful valley?
At Restaurant Bergführer in Davos Sertig you can stay and eat in a 450 year old house. The rooms are so beautiful and furnished with love and the food is really delicious.
4. Arosa
Arosa in the Grisons, like Davos, is known for its ski resorts. However, Arosa also has more to offer than winter fun. Besides the famous Arosa Humorfestival and the Bärenland, there are many panoramic hikes and places to see in summer and autumn.
Insider tip Arosa 1: For experienced hikers we recommend the beautiful alpine hike in the Swiss Alps from Arosa to Davos Frauenkirch (from Arosa via Maienfelder Furgga and Stafelalp to Davos Frauenkirch). Although the return trip by RhB from Davos to Arosa takes quite a long time, the hike is worth it.
Insider tip Arosa 2 : Gourmet friends and panorama lovers watch out. About a 30-minute drive away from Arosa is the pretty place of Strassberg, an ancient Walser village. With a permit, which you can buy in the local store in Langwies or by SMS, you can even drive directly into the place in summer and autumn https://www.berggasthaus-strassberg.ch/
5. Scuol – picturesque wellness place
Did you know that real mineral water bubbles out of the village fountains in Scuol? But not only that. Scuol is known as a wellness place in Switzerland with spas, carbonic acid baths, salt water baths and many more.
Scuol is also one of the hiking paradises of Switzerland and shows the beauty of the Grisons.
Tip Naluns : This place is not an insider tip but a cable car ride from Scuol to the Naluns and from there a scooter ride over the picturesque Ftan back to Scuol is a lot of fun.
6. S-Charl – a nature place to relax next to the Swiss National Park
Already the ride in the Val S-Charls reminds you as if you were in a wild national park. Switzerland has the oldest national park in Middle Europe, but unfortunately due to conflicts of interest it has remained at that.
In summer and autumn you can take a leisurely hike (family hike) from S-Charl to Alp Plazer (about 1.5h there and back), where you can continue hiking or simply enjoy the view of the Swiss mountain panorama. As a reward you can stop back in S-Charl at the Gasthaus Mayor, where traditional Graubünden food is served. Overnight stays are also offered in that place.
7. Ftan – One of the most beautiful fairytale villages in Switzerland
Probably one of the most picturesque villages in Switzerland and a place I can’t stop returning to, is the sun-drenched Ftan. The village fountains, cowbells and typical Graubünden houses will take you back in time and invite you to dream.
Especially as a photographer you will love that place so much. Towards the end of September the cows are back and give a top photo subject. It is also worthwhile for hikers and connoisseurs to make a stop above Ftan.
8. Schloss Tarasp – the place in Switzerland for castle lovers
Tarasp Castle near Scuol is a castle that proudly towers over the landscapes of the Grisons. Although built in the 11th century, it is still perfectly preserved today. This is because the inventor of mouth spray “Odol” bought the castle at the beginning of the 20th century and renovated it. There are even guided tours in the castle. Furthermore, the castle now belongs to the Engadine artist Not Vital, who turned the place into an attraction for art and museum lovers with art and sculptures. Nowadays, it’s a Swiss museum with a lot of charm and innovation.
Insider tip: The Tarasp Castle, which you can even see from the train ride to Scuol, is a great photo subject. Especially in the evening hours you have the best light to photograph from the village.
9. St.Moritz – one of the best places in Switzerland for Ski lovers
St.Moritz is the founder of winter tourism in Switzerland. Many guests (especially from England) already came to St.Moritz, but in winter they stayed in England. Johannes Badrutt promised his English summer guests to be able to enjoy the sun also in winter, otherwise he would take over the travel expenses. The rest is known – St.Moritz is not only the founder of Swiss winter tourism, but the place where many stars meet or spend their vacations.
Insider tip St.Moritz: Especially in summer St.Moritz is a dream with many places for hiking or sightseeing. One of the biggest insider tips is the hike to a magical hidden mountain lake called Lej de la Tscheppa. This hike, which takes about 5-6h and requires a very good fitness level, is one of the most beautiful hikes in Switzerland that I have ever done. And in the evening you can relax in a beautiful wellness hotel in St.Moritz. The hike is also suitable for a day trip if you leave early, for example from Zurich, but if you have the time, you should definitely book a hotel in St.Moritz.
10. Lake Sils – das Ausflugsziel für jeden Geschmack
Lake Sils is definitely the most beautiful lake of the Upper Engadine and one of the most beautiful bigger lakes in Switzerland at all. With long hiking routes, perfect swimming spots and golden larches (in autumn), Sils is one of the scenic jewels of Switzerland. Even skating on the black ice is possible in winter, when the lake is frozen but it hasn’t snowed yet. Also Stand-Up-Paddling (SUP) is very popular on the lake.
Insider tip Silsersee: Not even 12 minutes you have from St.Moritz to the Silsersee. A hike leads you from Sils in only 1h to the island of Chastè, a natural paradise with views of the Maloja, the larch forests and various glaciers. From mid-June to mid-October there is even a boat, which is Europe’s highest scheduled boat line!
11. Flüela Pass
The Flüela Pass above Davos is a place that is particularly worthwhile for hiking or even for resting. Although the two mountain lakes Lai da la Scotta and Lai Nair border directly on the road, you still have your peace (especially at the second-mentioned lake). In summer, the meadows are full of sheep, but most of them are rather shy. A great excursion destination and place to take a break in the Swiss Alps.
Insider tip Jöriseen: Probably one of the most beautiful hikes in Switzerland, if not the most beautiful starts next to the Flüelapass! I can highly recommend the unique Jöriseen circular hike, which takes about 5h and is only for experienced hikers. Especially impressive are the various colors of the lakes. These are caused by the different water access (surface water or glacier water). The Flüela Pass as well as the Jöriseen are easily accessible by the public bus from Davos.
12. Schlappin – the perfect place in Switzerland to enjoy the idyl of the mountains
Schlappin near Davos Klosters is another hidden gem. The Walser village is located on the border to Austria, which can be reached in only 500 meters of altitude difference (Schlappiner Joch). The impressive mountain panorama and the beautiful Schlappinsee (reservoir) are dreamlike. Also highly recommended is a walk through the Schlappin forest, where streams and waterfalls meander wildly through the forest.
Insider tip Schlappin: This is a great tip for gourmet friends. Berghaus Erika serves delicious food, if possible all prepared from regional products. To be honest, I probably ate here the best rösti in Switzerland (with ratatouille). Furthermore, you can also stay overnight at the Erika Inn but it’s as well a great day trip from Davos or even Zurich.
13. Lake Cauma
When you think of lakes in Switzerland, Lake Cauma is probably one name that comes to mind because it is one of the most famous mountain lake in the Swiss Alps. Accordingly, the tourist traffic is also huge. It is a very beautiful place in Switzerland, but it‘s worth not to visit the lake during the main hours from 12am till 5 pm.
Furthermore, don’t visit Lake Cauma during the summer vacations or weekends, and if so you should arrive at morning and evening hours.
A great tip is the hike to the viewing platform Il Spir, which you can reach in about 1.5 hours. From there you have a wonderful view of the Rhine Gorge, where one of the largest rockfalls in Switzerland occurred.
14. Lake Cresta
Not far away from the famous Caumasee lies in a landscape full of fir trees the Crestasee. In summer, instead of going to Lake Cauma, it is worth traveling to Lake Cresta, because the lake is as beautiful, but there are much fewer crowds. Perhaps because Lake Cresta is accessible only by walking (20-30 minutes each way).
Tip Crestasee : At Crestasee there is a boat and a standup paddle rental, which can make your swimming trip even more diverse. Furthermore, you can grab a bite to eat at the lakeside restaurant. A place you will love!
15. Rhine Gorge with the famous place Il Spir
The Rhine Gorge is known throughout Switzerland, as one of the largest rockfalls in Swiss history occurred here. On the one hand, there is the famous place Il Spir, where it is sometimes very crowded. However, the Rhine Gorge has so many other beautiful viewpoints that the people are also well distributed. Likewise, a hike through the gorge is very impressive and highly recommended. You can even see chamois if you are lucky.
Insider tip Rhine Gorge: A great viewpoint away from the crowds can be found at the “Isla Davos”, which is located between Versam and Bonaduz. It is a very biodiverse area, so chances are great that you can see rare species like orchids.
-
Lej da la Tscheppa
Another insider tip regarding places to visit in South-East Switzerland is the Lej da la Tscheppa. The mountain lake is located above the Silsersee and can only be reached with a hike of about 900 meters difference in altitude. In other words, only experienced hikers can do it. But the reward with the panorama and a possible bath in the cold mountain lake is tremendous.
-
St. Antönien
St. Antönien is a paradise in the Grisons. You could think that here the world is still in order. The place is a super starting point for hikes, both in winter and in summer. In summer I can recommend the Partnunsee, where even a few small boats are waiting for the guests.
Places to visit in the Zurich region
18. Panorama lakefront walk on Lake Zurich from Wädenswil to Richterswil
Yes, I love them, these infinity wooden bridges! I bet you do too? That’s why this should definitely be on the bucketlist of the top places to visit in Switzerland. Two of my favorite wooden bridges are on Lake Zurich. One of the most idyllic is the one from Wädenswil to Richterswil. You can reach Richterswil in about an hour. But I’m sure you will definitely stop and enjoy the wonderful panoramic view of Lake Zurich and the Swiss Alps. There are several places to sit.
Tip lakeside walk Lake Zurich: The walk is also well suited for families with strollers.
19. Pfäffikersee (with Juckerhof, nature reserve)
The Pfäffikersee is a great place to visit as a day trip from from Switzerlands biggest city Zurich. It has something to offer for everyone. A circular hike around the Pfäffikersee is especially great. Past moor landscapes and high biodiversity, even deer can be seen with a little luck.
Tip Pfäffikersee: I can only recommend a refreshment at the Juckerhof. The farm, which has its own farm restaurant, cooks excellent food and is very family-friendly. In addition to an apple maze, the pumpkin figures are a particular sight in the fall!
20. Alpine bath above Lake Zurich
Wellness in the canton of Zurich? Yes, we have a great place for you! The Alpenbad near the Bachtel is a destination for all wellness lovers. What could be better than enjoying the view in the hot tub while eating a delicious Swiss fondue?
Tip Alpenbad Bachtel: Especially in winter we recommend an early reservation, because also companies sometimes reserve directly the whole facility for their Christmas dinner.
21. Waid (Best view over Zurich)
For me one of the most beautiful vantage points over the region of Zurich is the viewpoint Waid. On a good day, you can not only oberserve the city of Zurich and the Üetliberg, but also Lake Zurich and the Alps. If you’ve been once, you’ll want to come back again and again. The Waid vantage point is particularly a spectacular place when the weather changes.
Insider tip Waid : A nice walk leads from ETH Höngerberg to the viewpoint Waid. A unique feeling will grip you when you turn the corner at the allotment gardens and see the whole city of Zurich with Lake Zurich in front of you.
22. Lake Egel
This is another insider tip in the Zurich region. The tranquility of the Egelsee near Dietikon is stunning, as is the nature. The whole area around the lake is a natural reserve. However, the lake has various swimming opportunities and fireplaces, which also makes it a great destination for families.
Tip Egelsee: There is a free parking lot in Bergdietikon, where you can reach Egelsee in about an hour. It is a great place also for families with children.
23. Eglisau
Eglisau am Rhein is one of the most beautiful towns in the canton of Zurich. More precisely, Eglisau is a small town. Located directly on the Rhine, the region around Eglisau was already inhabited by the Celts and Romans. The town itself was built from the 13th century and invites you to stroll and swim.
Insider tip Eglisau 1: A great hike, which can also be done with families (somewhat older children), is from Eglisau to Rüdlingen via Buchberg. In summer, you can take a leisurely swim in Eglisau before continuing the hike. You also pass various farmhouses that grow grapes.
Insider tip Eglisau 2: Matthias Bechtel from Eglisau is one of the 150 best Swiss winemakers. Anyone who loves wines should definitely stop by his place.
24. Regensberg
What a beautiful place, this Regenberg! If you are looking for beautiful places in Switzerland or in the canton of Zurich, this is a must-see. Besides nice cafes and great restaurants, you can also visit the castle, where you will find a museum about the history of Regensburg and its castle.
25. Kyburg
Kyburg also has a fortress, another excursion tip from Zurich. First mentioned around 1027, Kyburg was owned by the Habsburgs. When you see the view from the castle, it’s a really well chosen base. They invented the first castle museum in Switzerland at that place.
Tip Kyburg : The beautiful restaurants invite you to linger. Especially from late spring to autumn the castle is a great sight to visit from Zurich.
26. Sihlwald
Imagine that not far from Zurich there is a primeval forest. A forest in which nature creates and rules, just as it was allowed to do millions of years before. A forest where man does not interfere, where a forest is still allowed to be a forest. Where fallen logs and wood are left lying and there are still living nightingales and woodcocks.
Welcome to the Sihlwald, the primeval forest of Switzerland outside the city gates of Zurich. Yes you hear right, since 2009 there is a core zone, strictly protected, where nothing is done. The oldest tree is about 160 years old. It will take another 500 years before the Sihlwald is a real primeval forest. But the goals of the place have been set. And we already have signs of a primeval forest today.
Tip Sihlwald: An impressive hike through Sihlwald is from Sihlwald train station to Albishorn. On the Albishorn you will enjoy an incredible panoramic view of Lake Zurich and you can indulge yourself with delicious Swiss foods in the mountain restaurant. Would you like to enjoy a great swim after your summer hike? Then let’s go to the Türlersee, which is located on the other side of the Sihlwald and the Albishorn.
27. Zürich
Zurich with the beautiful Lake Zurich is also another must place to visit in Switzerland, especially for people who do not live in this region. In the medieval city there is truly much to see. Think of the district Lindenhof, which is already more than 1000 years old. Or the Europaallee, which was built only a few years ago. Moreover, there is the Langstrasse, where cultures and people from all walks of life meet. It is also fantastic that Zurich has its own local mountain, the Üetliberg.
Tip Zurich: If you want to enjoy the view of Lake Zurich and the city of Zurich, I recommend the panoramic view from the church Fluntern. Here is a great chance that you have the vantage point over Zurich alone for yourself.
28. Medieval town of Rapperswil
Imagine strolling along a lakeside promenade with a southern flair, through a wonderfully fragrant rose garden and then enjoying the magnificent expanse of royal blue water. Sounds like a beach vacation in the south? Welcome to the place called Rapperswil, the medieval town on Lake Zurich. A wonderful excursion destination only 30 minutes from Zurich. Although Rapperswil officially belongs to the canton of St.Gallen, the city borders directly on the canton of Zurich, which is why we count Rapperswil as part of the Zurich region.
Tip Rapperswil : If you have enjoyed your time in Rapperswil, I recommend the leisurely hike across the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland. The family hike is suitable for strollers too.
Lindt and Sprüngli Factory
Hirzel
Marthalen
Most beautiful Places to visit in Eastern Switzerland
29. Hikes along the Churfirsten
A great panoramic hike in Toggenburg with a view of the Churfirsten and the Säntis mountains in Alpstein awaits you. But that’s not all: Caves where prehistoric people lived and a really adventurous cable car ride await you.
Insider tip Churfirsten hike : For the panoramic hike along the Churfirsten, which takes about three hours, we recommend taking the cable car in Wildhaus to Oberdorf (one stop). After that, you’ll start hiking along a sound trail (family excursion) and finally end at Alp Selamatt. Since the paths are not well marked, a hiking map is very helpful (or at least check on GPS again and again). Finally, you take one of the most adventurous and oldest cable cars in Switzerland to Alt St.Johann.
30. Voralpsee
Not far from Wildhaus is the Voralpsee. This beautiful lake in Toggenburg is worth a trip, both in snow (possibly put on snowshoes) and in spring and autumn. In summer it can get very crowded on nice days because the place is very popular for swimming.
31. Säntis
According to experts, the mountain was once over 5000 meters high. Nevertheless, today’s 2502m high Säntis is the king of the Alpstein. It towers above all and is a destination for young and old. Either you can go up with the cable car or you can reach the top of the Säntis with a rigorous hike via Lake Seealpsee (approx. 4h).
Insider tip Säntis: There are two ways to the Säntis via Seealpsee. We know the way where you pass by the mountain restaurant Mesmer. The Rösti, which is served there, is incredibly good and highly recommended! With such a panorama, it is almost impossible to resist.
32. Seealpsee
Together with the Fälensee and the Sämtisersee, the Seealpsee is one of the three lakes of the Säntis massif and probably the most famous Instagram subject of the Alpstein region. Despite the steep path, it is literally overrun in the summer. Therefore, it is one of the places in Switzerland, which I would visit in spring and autumn, in summer either only in the morning or omit completely.
33. Fälensee
Besides Seealpsee, Fälensee is the second lake in Alpstein that has gained massive popularity due to Instagram. Due to the massive rock walls that surround the lake, the mountain lake is called the fjord of Switzerland. The only way to get there is via hiking which takes you about 3 hours from Brülisau to Fälensee. At the Fälensee, either the restaurant Bollenwies or a bath in the maximum 18 degrees Celsius cold water awaits you.
34. Appenzell
The pretty Appenzell has long been internationally known. Is it the cheese or the beautiful houses? Probably both! The architecture in Appenzell is very special and shows its peak in this small town.
Insider tip Appenzell: Gourmet friends watch out. Not far from Appenzell is the Appenzeller Schaukäserei, a very famous cheese factory in Switzerland. The place is great for kids due to the gamification of the visit. For adult gourmets I have this tip: Buy the fresh Appenzeller Raclette cheese at the Schaukäserei. This was probably the best raclette cheese I have ever eaten. Attention: You can also find Appenzeller Raclette cheese in the Supermarket Migros. This is also nice, but the quality is not to be compared with the cheese directly boutght from the store of the show dairy.
35. Kronberg – a place in Switzerland for families
Kronberg is the mountain for families and adventurers. An incredible panorama of the Alpstein, Toggenburg and Appenzell as well as Lake Constance awaits you and your family. The Kronberg is also perfect for enjoying panoramic hikes in the Eastern part of Switzerland.
Tip Kronberg: Don’t miss to do the toboggan run on the Kronberg (bob run). You drive about 1000 meters towards the valley, which takes about 5 minutes per ride. Of course, you have a wonderful view of an incredibly beautiful panorama.
36. Hoher Kasten
The Hoher Kasten is the sister mountain of the Säntis. The view of Lake Sämtis and the Säntis is very spectacular. Even better is the steep hike from the Hoher Kasten back to Brülisau (only doable with good knees) – a picture book hike par excellence.
Insider tip Hoher Kasten: There aren’t many hidden places left in Alpstein, but Alp Soll is definitely one! The most delicious Appenzeller mountain cheese, good yogurt made from mountain milk and a lovely traditional mountain hut invite you to a journey into another world, far away from the hustle and bustle of city life and everyday work.
37. Äscher – the most beautiful place in the World according to National Geographic
National Geographic called the Äscher in Eastern Switzerland the «place of a lifetime». That was the end of the idyll on Ebenalp. But let’s be honest: The Äscher and the Ebenealp are still beautiful. Also simply ingenious, the great hiking possibilities offered in this region. Of course, you can also take the cable car from Wasserauen directly to Ebenalp and reach the Äscher in 10 minutes. However, for a seat and a Rösti in the restaurant it can be partly very tight on summer days due to the masses of people.
38. Lake Sämtis
Lake Sämtis is the third large lake in the Alpstein massif. With a depth of 70 meters it is the second deepest mountain lake in Switzerland. In a comfortable 3km (apart from the initial ascent) you can reach the lake in the Swiss Alps from Brülisau.
Tip Lake Sämtis: Stopping and refreshing yourself at the mountain restaurant Blattenbödeli at Lake Sämtiser is a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the panorama to the fullest. The summer season usually lasts from the beginning of May to the end of October. The mountain restaurant is then open every day.
39. Panorama hike Toggenburg
Do you want to do a great panoramic hike in Toggenburg, Eastern Switzerland? Then this is one of the favorites. From Wildhaus you hike to the mountain station Gamplüt, where you can either enjoy a picnic by yourself with a view of the Churfirsten and the Säntis or stop at the mountain restaurant at the cable car station. The hike continues to Chüehboden and then back to Alt St.Johan or Unterwasser.
Insider tip Toggenburg: In about an hour you can reach Gräppelensee from Chüeboden, one of the most beautiful lakes in Eastern Switzerland. At this stunning place you have a dream view and you can even go swimming.
40. Thur Falls
Also connectable with the previous “panoramic hike Toggenburg”, you can visit the Thur falls, a beautiful waterfall only about 10 minutes walk from Unterwasser.
Insider tip Thur Falls: In spring during the snowmelt, the waterfall carries the most water. It is the ideal time to visit this place in Eastern Switzerland! In a hot summer, the falls may even have no water.
41. Rhine Falls – the must place for waterfall lovers
The Rhine Falls are the largest waterfalls in Europe and definitely worth a visit! Although it has its source in Switzerland (Vorder- and Hinterrhein), it is simply impressive how much water the Rhine already carries (sometimes over 600 m3/s). It also takes a long time until the Rhine water flows into the sea in Holland. Despite the masses of tourists, the Rhine Falls are for me one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland and a must place to visit for every tourist.
Tip Rhine Falls: There are two sites where you can park at the Rhine Falls. The big parking is at Neuhausen am Rheinfall. But we recommend to park directly at the castle in Laufen am Rheinfall. There is an elevator that takes you down to the Rhine Falls and brings you the closest possible to the water masses – very impressive!
42. Schaffhausen – the most northern town in Switzerland
The medieval town of Schaffhausen is worth a visit. What’s better than siting in summer in a nice restaurant, having an ice cream and enjoy the dolce vita. Schaffhausen has a lot to offer and is historically very interesting.
Tip Schaffhausen 1: The Munot in Schaffhausen is one of the most famous castles in Switzerland. Therefore it is one of the places for your Switzerland travel bucketlist. The view of Schaffhausen and the Rhine is tremendous and also a great subject for photographers.
Tip Schaffhausen 2: A boat trip on the Rhine from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein is one of the most beautiful and liberating experiences in Switzerland! It is the perfect moment to relax and let the many impressions pass by. If you don’t have so much time for a trip to Stein am Rhein, you can also get off in Diessenhofen.
43. Pizol
The 5-lake hike on the Pizol is one of the most impressive hikes in Switzerland! I especially liked the Wildsee and the Schottensee. Word has spread that this is a beautiful hike and the marketing of the Pizolbahnen is also working well. That means there are many people during the high seasons and weekends. If you want to avoid the crowds, you should do the hike from Monday to Thursday and not during the main holiday season.
By the way: The Pizol area is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona.
Insider tip Pizol: For especially fit hikers we recommend hiking from the Weisstannental via the waterfall arena Batöni to the Wildsee. A guaranteed unforgettable highlight!
44. Saxer gap
Saxer Lücke is another Instagram subject in the Alpstein. The pass crossing between the canton of St.Gallen and Appenzell AI is one of the worth seeing spots in the Alpstein region. And the best is, that the place is not far from the Fälensee and Sämtisersee lakes. Many drive up to the Hohen Kasten and hike from there to the Saxer Lücke.
-
Schwellbrun
Schwellbrunn was the most beautiful village in Switzerland in 2017. The typical Appenzell houses with a unique panoramic view of the Säntis give the village a special charm. Here you can not only eat well but there are also carriage rides.
-
Steckborn
Lake Constance is a real jewel on the border with Germany and Austria. Fortunately, places on the Swiss side also belong to the lake. An insider tip is the medieval town of Steckborn. Especially the harbor with the house facades and the lake is very picturesque.
The most beautiful places in the region of Bern and Bernese Oberland
47. Thun
With the Aare, Lake Thun, the gigantic castle, the medieval houses and the mountain panorama of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, the city of Thun is one of the most beautiful cities in Switzerland. A highlight are the surfers at the mill lock, who show off their skills.
Tip Thun: For the summer river rafting, also called the “Aarebötle“, is a must to do in summer for experienced people. From Thun to Bern you are around 4 hours on the rubber boat and enjoy a beautiful ride. Attention: By law it is obligatory since 2020 to wear life jackets. There are different entrances. The longest stretch at the Aarebötle is when you get in at Thun Schwäbis. There is even a service for a few francs that lets you inflate the rubber boat (in summer there can be long queues). At the railroad bridge in Üttigen you have the most dangerous place, there necessarily to drive on the right side of the bridge pass. For more details I recommend to study the guide under this link.
-
Kiental
Near the Kandertal there is a side valley called Kiental. Inconspicuous at first sight, it hides not only the steepest post bus route in Europe in the direction of Griesalp. A hike is also absolutely worthwhile, because you pass countless unknown waterfalls.
Another highlight is the Tschingelsee, a nature reserve with countless endangered species.
-
Gasterntal
Above Kandersteg is the wonderful Gasterntal. With its many waterfalls and scenic idyll, this place is a must for every nature lover. Not only that: you can also go on great hikes, stay overnight in idyllic hotels or eat a great lunch and dinner.
This place is only open from Mai till October due to the snow and possible avalanches.
50. Sigriswil – A bucket list place for lovers of the Netflix Serie «Crash Landing on You»
One municipality with 11 villages? Yes, that’s how the municipality of Sigriswil advertises. The typical houses of the Bernese Oberland make Sigriswil and its partner villages a beautiful region. Also ingenious that you can enjoy a great view of the Niesen and with good visibility even the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. It’s a place to visit in Switzerland for all action lovers.
Tip Sigriswil 1: Are you looking for wellness in Switzerland? The Solbad Hotel in Sigriswil will make your wishes come true.
Tip Sigriswil 2 : The suspension bridge of Sigriswil is a place in Switzerland for adventure lovers. For 8 francs you can cross the panoramic bridge where even the famous South Korean Netflix Series Crash Landing on You was filmed. The bridge is 340 meters long and 182 meters high and was built for the population so that the way to school between Aeschlen and Sigriswil would be shorter.
51. Iseltwald
What once was an insider tip has developed into an Instagram hotspot. The place of Iseltwald at Lake Brienz is a jewel true jewel in Switzerland. Not only because of the Seeburg Castle, but also because of the charming Bernese wooden houses and the panoramic view of the Brienzer Rothorn and Augstmatthorn. Away from the summer there are nevertheless very few people in Iseltwald. Iseltwald is also very easy to reach from Interlaken by boat, train or car.
Tip Iseltwald: An idyllic hike is made on the lakeside path from Iseltwald to the Giessbach waterfalls. The waterfall has 14 steps, which then flow into Lake Brienz.
52. Brienz
Brienz is located at the lake Brienz and is a place worth seeing. With its wooden houses and the proximity to the lake and the mountains, it offers the ideal mix between everything you need. The well-known Brienzer Rothorn is the local mountain of Brienz. Brienz can also be reached in a very short time from Interlaken.
Tip Brienz: The Brienzer Rothorn Bahn is a great tip to climb a mountain with a nostalgic steam train (over 120 years old). In about an hour you reach the mountain Brienzer Rothorn.
53. Grindelwald – one of the most famous places in Switzerland
Also easy to reach from Interlaken is Grindelwald. Although very touristy and known worldwide, Grindelwald is one of my favorite places. This may be because the region is so large and diverse that there are also many insider places.
Tip Grindelwald: A wellness hotel that we can warmly recommend is the Aspen in Grindelwald. Besides the wellness, the friendly staff and the great view of the hotel, I really liked the breakfast.
Secret tip Grindelwald: This tip is for all nature lovers, hiking enthusiasts and photographers. If you hike from Grosse Scheidegg over the Stepfihubel towards Grindelwald Bort, you will have countless of perfect photo subjects with farmhouses, the mountain panorama of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, glaciers and much more! The best time to take photos are the morning hours.
54. Wengen – a famous skiing place in the Alps of Switzerland
Wengen is famous for its Lauberhorn ski descent and the trip to Kleine Scheidegg and the Jungfraujoch. The train journey from Lauterbrunnen to Wengen alone is an adventure with its view and makes every heart beat faster. But also the view of the Lauterbrunnen valley is gigantic and highly recommended.
Insider Tip Wengen: My tip is the panoramic hike from Wengen to Lauterbrunnen, which takes about one hour. The path is very steep and good knees are a prerequisite, but the beautiful view of the Lauterbrunnen valley as well as the different angles on Lauterbrunnen are a highlight. This is also a highlight for photographers looking for a photo trip in Switzerland or photo spots! From late spring to autumn in the morning is the best light for photography.
55. Mürren – one of my favourite places in Switzerland
Hey beautiful Mürren! This is by far my favorite town in the Bernese Oberland and one of the most beautiful places in Switzerland. The view from Mürren to Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau and the other mountains is just gigantic. Also the atmospheres in the morning and evening are beautiful. Furthermore, Mürren offers various excursion possibilities like the cable car to the Schilthorn mountain or the crazy Via Ferrata for adventurers.
Insider tip Mürren: The panoramic hike from Mürren to Gimmelwald offers one of the greatest varieties of Switzerland. Not only glaciers and the permanent view of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, but also orchids, forests and much more you can admire. The village of Gimmelwald, the destination with its “Honesty Store” is hard to beat in charm.
Tip Mürren: Are you looking for a good restaurant in Mürren? Then we can highly recommend the restaurant of the Hotel Bellevue Mürren.
56. Lauterbrunnen – one of the most hyped places in Switzerland (fair enough!)
Lauterbrunnen is one of the most hyped places in Switzerland. Not without reason! Because the huge Staubbach Falls, the beautiful wooden houses as well as the massive rock walls attract tourists and Swiss to this destination. By the way, the Staubbach Falls is the second highest waterfall in Switzerland and worth a visit!
Insider tip Lauterbrunnen: Lauterbrunnen is not only beautiful along the tourist route, it is worth to simply explore the side streets and enjoy the view of the Staubbach Falls and Lauterbrunnen from another angle.
57. Niesen
From mid-April to mid-November, the Niesenbahn runs up the Niesen, where spectacular views of Lake Thun, Lake Brienz and the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau await.
If you want to hike at the Niesen, I recommend hiking up from the bottom or from the middle station. Hiking down is very steep and not much fun. Another more pleasant route is to hike from Niesen to Horboden, where a public bus is waiting for you (runs only seasonally).
58. Kleine Scheidegg
The Kleine Scheidegg above Grindelwald is a scenic jewel. In about 1h and 15 minutes from Interlaken, you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view. Directly behind the historic mountain inn proudly towers the almost 4000 meter high Eiger with the remains of its once long glacier.
Tip Kleine Scheidegg: The place can be easily reached by hiking from Grindelwald, Wengen as well as from Lauterbrunnen. No matter which way, each hike is a panoramic hike in itself.
59. Gstaad – the place for celebrities
Although only a village, Gstaad is known from the Indian Bollywood movies. Furthermore, many famous celebrities visit that charming place in the Swiss Alps. Besides the wellness and luxury hotels, Gstaad is an ideal base for excursions both in summer and winter.
Insider tip Gstaad: Not far from Gstaad is one of the most beautiful places in the canton of Bern. In a steep hike peppered with rare orchid species, you will find above Boltigen the idyllic Walopsee, a mountain lake that is definitely a jewel. If you are quite fit, you can hike on from Walopsee to Kaiseregg and from there to Schwarzsee.
-
Jaun pass
Near Zweisimmen and Gstaad is the Jaun Pass. Let’s be honest, in summer it is very busy. Nevertheless, there are views to enjoy that are simply indescribably beautiful! Especially the lightly powdered mountain peaks in spring and autumn are a highlight for photographers. A walk to Rämisbächli is very worthwhile and a great insider tip. However, cars are not allowed there.
61. Lake Arnensee
Not far located from Gstaad is Lake Arnen, a popular summer destination. Especially nice is to take a swim in the cold mountain water, relax by the lake or enjoy a hike around the lake.
Secret tip Arnensee (Category: Hikes Switzerland, Mountain lakes Switzerland, Excursion destinations Switzerland): If you want to escape the crowds on weekends, we recommend hiking towards Col de Vore. From there you have a panoramic view of Lake Arnen, Glacier 3000 and many more. In summer, there are also huge amounts of blueberries, a dream for everyone – and woman.
62. Engstlensee
Engstlensee is a Swiss mountain lake near Melchseefrutt. The mountain idyll, the many fish in the lake and the restaurant attract a lot of people up there on weekends. On good days you have a great view of the Titlis.
Secret tip Engstlensee: Whenever the starry sky is easily observable, you have a unique night sky at Engstlensee. Especially spectacular is the observation of shooting stars.
63. Brienzer Rothorn
The Brienzer Rothorn above Brienz is something you have to see once in summer. A beautiful mountain panorama with views of to Interlaken, Lake Thun and Brienz and the mountains Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau is awaiting the visitors.
Insider tip Brienzer Rothorn: Have you always wanted to see ibexes in the wild? Then the Steinbrock Trek at the Brienzer Rothorn is your destination. Because here the chance is very high that you will see ibexes in the wild. However, please always keep enough distance from the animals.
64. Lake Oeschinen – a viral place in the Bernese Oberland
Lake Oeschinen is one of the most viral places in Switzerland. A mountain lake framed by mighty rock faces and a view of the Upper and Lower Oeschinen glaciers as well as the Doldenhorn and Fründen glaciers is spectacular. It was formed naturally by a large rockfall. Today, Lake Oeschinen attracts thousands of people to the region. The lake is not only a paradise for relaxing, but also for hiking.
Tip Oeschinensee: A beautiful panoramic hike is the hike from the Oeschinensee to the Blüemlisalphütte SAC, where you can spend the night. Afterwards, the hike continues in the direction of Griesalp. The mountain hut offers Swiss food. Furthermore, the view of the Blüemlisalp glacier is phenomenal. The hike from Kandersteg to Griesalp is very long for a day hike with around 10 hours, that’s why I recommend to stay in the Alpine Hut. Please be aware to reserve the beds far in advance.
65. Lenk – a place for nature lovers and ski enthusiasts
Lenk is in winter a paradise for skiing, while hiking is popular in summer. I tell you an insider tip, to one of the most special and beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland. It‘s name is Siebenbrünne. Already the hike past the Simmen Falls is a highlight. But the Siebenbrünne is a very special waterfall. Like in a magic show, the water suddenly emerges from the rock at seven different places. It is a karst waterfall, which means that the water is led underground through the limestone rock massif until it emerges.
It is definitely worth planning enough time here, because it’s a place of peace and relaxation and at the same time one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Switzerland.
Tip Lenkerhof: The Lenkerhof is one of the best wellness hotels in Switzerland! We loved to stay at this beautiful hotel. In addition to the many different saunas and the sulfur whirlpool, the gourmet food and the beautiful panoramic view attracts.
66. Rosenlaui – an idyllic place with a river, glacier and stunning mountains in the Swiss Jungfrau Region
The Klein Wellhorn stands proudly in the landscape while the river, filled with glacier water, flows peacefully down the valley. Welcome to the Rosenlaui Valley – probably the most beautiful valley in Switzerland. It is a valley for connoisseurs, romantics, poets and all those who love nature. Although the Rosenlaui valley is getting more and more famous due to instagram, it is still an insider tip.
Tip Rosenlaui (category: excursions Switzerland, family excursions Switzerland, insider tips Switzerland, gorges Switzerland): The glacier gorge Rosenlaui is a tip you should not miss if you are in the region. Here you can feel the power and energy of the water in a romantic gorge. The tour, which takes about 45 minutes, is also a great destination for a family outing.
67. Blausee – the most famous lake in Switzerland
The Blausee is the highlight for many tourists and Swiss in the Bernese Oberland. It is beautiful but not for those who are looking for peace and quiet. That’s why we recommend to travel to the Blausee during the week. Similar to the Oeschinensee, the Blausee was formed by a natural rockfall. Due to the short distance it is also a perfect place to visit for families. https://www.blausee.ch/de/chronik/
Insider tip Blausee: Many people drive to Kandersteg especially for the Blausee. But the region around Kandersteg has so much more to offer. One has seen the Blausee after some time. How about the Oeschinensee afterwards? Or a trip to the unknown Gasterntal?
68. Aareschlucht
The Aare Gorge is probably the most famous gorge in Switzerland. Nevertheless, it is always nice to see it and a great destination for an excursion from Meiringen. 1.4 kilometers long and up to 200 meters deep, the water masses meander through the Aare Gorge. The leisurely walk through the gorge takes about 30 minutes. The Aare Gorge is also a great place to visit for families.
69. Grosse Scheidegg
The Grosse Scheidegg is a mountain accessible by public bus from Grindelwald or by hiking from Grindelwald Bort. The place with the Klein Wellhorn in the background is a great destination to enjoy a vacation day in Switzerland.
Insider tip Grosse Scheidegg: In winter you can sled from the Grosse Scheidegg to Grindelwald.
Excursion destinations in Valais
70. Great Aletsch Glacier
Welcome to the beautiful Valais. Valais has a lot to offer. One of the most beautiful places is the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in Switzerland and the Alps. With the cable car you have several possibilities to reach the destination comfortably. From Riederalp as well as from Bettmeralp or Fiesch you can reach the viewpoints to the Aletsch Glacier.
Tip Aletsch Glacier: You will find the most impressive view of the Aletsch Glacier from the Eggishorn. From there you can see not only the Aletsch Glacier, but also the Mittelaletsch Glacier and the Konkordiaplatz.
71. Susten Pass – fastest place to see a glacier in Switzerland by car
The Susten Pass is a must for your road trip in Switzerland! The panoramic drive with views of the Swiss Alps and the glacier world is spectacular. It’s also worth stopping at the famous photo spot to take a souvenir picture with the Stein glacier and the Stein lake. The best light is here in the morning hours.
Insider tip Sustenpass: Although most people just drive by, the Steinsee with the Stein Glacier is worth a photo not only from the pass road, but you can also park the car and explore the lake or to let your soul dangle. You can hardly get to a glacier faster than here. A great place to visit in Switzerland!
72. Grimsel Pass
The Grimsel Pass, which connects the cantons of Valais and Bern, is also part of a road trip. The meandering road is a lot of fun for anyone who likes to drive! But the Grimsel Pass has more to offer than just roads. The Grimsel is also a symbol of hydroelectric power. A total of over six percent of Switzerland’s electricity is produced in this region. Four large reservoirs have been built in the process. In total, the Grimsel area has buried around six kilometers of a valley under water.
Insider tip Unteraaregletscher: The hike from Grimselpass to Lauteraarhütte SAC is hard to beat in terms of spectacle and panorama.
73. Zermatt – the most famous tourist place in Switzerland
Honestly, the mountain village Zermatt with the Matterhorn is one of the most special and beautiful places in Switzerland. You can’t describe the feeling when you stand on the Riffelalp or at the Trockener Steg and enjoy the view of the 4478m high mountain. An Englishman was the first to climb the Matterhorn in Zermatt in 1865. In the meantime there are up to 3000 alpinists every summer reaching the top, on peak days 100 climbers.
Insider tip Zermatt: In summer and fall, Zermatt advertises a 5-lake hike. This one is beautiful, but full of tourists. Would you like to have a little less people around you but enjoy more nature? Then I recommend the 15-lake hike in Zermatt. The melted glaciers created countless mountain lakes. With a permanent view of the Matterhorn it’s a world of its own! You take the cable car from Zermatt to the station “Trockener Steg”. From there you hike in the direction of Schwarzsee. In summer and until mid-October you can even rent a scooter at Schwarzsee and ride back to Zermatt, a real adventure!
Tip Zermatt: Would you like to enjoy a unique view of the Matterhorn in one of the most beautiful wellness hotels in Switzerland? Honestly, I even have two to choose from, which I can highly recommend for vacations in Switzerland or a few days off. One is the Matterhorn Focus Hotel, which boasts a unique design and is located near the train station. On the other hand, the Riffelalp Hotel, which is one of the most famous wellness hotels in Switzerland and Zermatt due to its beautiful pool with an unobstructed view of the Matterhorn. By the way, at 2222 meters above sea level, it is the highest 5-star hotel in Europe.
74. Leukerbad
Leukerbad is known for its thermal baths and wellness hotels and the natural warm water, which has made Leukerbad the most famous wellness resort in Switzerland. Even the Romans were in the hot springs in Leukerbad. Leukerbad is not only known for the wellness, but also for beautiful hikes. Probably the most famous is on the Gemmi Pass in the direction of Kandersteg.
Tip Leukerbad: This is a Switzerland-wide phenomenon: Have you ever seen warm water flowing out of a fountain? Then you have to go to Leukerbad. Warm water flows into the village from a total of 65 thermal springs, and a small amount leaves the village fountains.
75. Crans Montana – golf, ski and wellness place in the Valais Alp
Crans Montana is a well-known golf, ski and wellness place in Switzerland and a vacation destination for CEOs of the biggest Swiss watch brands. It is not without reason that the Omega Masters golf tournament is held here. But nature is also a paradise. Those who drive up to the almost 3000-meter-high Pointe de la Plaine Morte have the best view of the Glacier de la Plaine Morte of the same name in summer.
Tip Crans-Montana: One of the most beautiful luxury and wellness hotels in Switzerland is LeCrans Hotel & Spa. With its huge wellness area, beautiful pool, individually decorated rooms and friendly staff, it is one of the top addresses among the luxury hotels in Switzerland.
76. Aminona – a place for dreamers in the Swiss Alps
Only about 15 minutes by bus from Crans-Montana is the place called Aminona, a jewel in the Swiss Alps. This is the perfect starting point for hikes, both in winter and summer. I recommend the Relais de Colombire as an insider tip and unique mountain hotel. Here you not only get very tasty food in the restaurant with a gigantic panoramic view, you can also spend the night in an old Maiensäss, which is lovingly decorated inside. On days with a good view you can even see the Matterhorn. Pure romance and a feeling of freedom!
Tip Aminona: In summer you can reach the Relais de Colombire by car, in winter only by foot or by snow cab. But in winter you can sled down the toboggan run – fun is guaranteed! You can also do more than enough hiking in this region of Switzerland. The best thing is to ask the friendly host Angela, she will tell you the best insider tips.
77. Binntal Valley
The wild and romantic Binntal is one of the biggest insider tips in Switzerland – a paradise for nature lovers and hikers. From Binn or Fäld you can start your hikes in all directions and meet secret Swiss mountain lakes. Especially in summer and autumn is the place worthwhile for hikers. In spring and winter there is usually a great danger of avalanches.
Insider tip Binntal: Have you always wanted to find a crystal? Then your chances are very high in the Valais Binntal, because huge crystals have already been found here. In the Lengenbach mineral mine, about 30 minutes from the Fäld parking lot, you can try your luck – preferably with a hammer and pick.
78. Ernen
Ernen is located at the gates of the Binn Valley and has established itself as a village for music and art. Moreover, it attracts international artists to the romantic village of Goms every year. Ernen also attaches great importance to sustainable tourism. That’s why you can stay in bio hotels.
Insider tip Ernen 1: The neighboring place of Mühlebach, which can be reached in a leisurely walk, is the village with the oldest wooden core in Switzerland. Some of the wooden houses are over 500 years old! With the view of the surrounding mountains a dream!
Insider tip Ernen 2: I love Swiss fruit pies over everything and have probably already bought and eaten the cake in over 150 bakeries. But the best pie (Wähe) I ever had was in the neighboring village of Ernen in Mühlenbach at the Hängebrigga Bed & Breakfast/Cafe of the Olympic snowboard champion Patrizia Kummer. By the way, you can also reach this coffee via the suspension bridge Goms (Fürgangen-Mühlebach).
79. Bettmeralp
Bettmeralp, the mountain village above Fiesch is just amazing. Hard to beat in romance, it is a dream for every skier or hiker. In the morning and evening hours, the famous Instaspot with the chapel of Bettmeralp is recommended for a good photo.
Insider tip Bettmeralp: Also a dream for photographers and connoisseurs is the Villa Cassell on Bettmeralp. Formerly a residence of a wealthy Englishman, it was converted into a hotel and taken over by Pro Natura in 1976.
-
Grengiols – a place for tulip lovers
Grenigiols is a dream place in the Valais region. Not only is the pretty village nestled in a beautiful mountain world. There is a type of tulip here which exists only once in the world. Yes, you heard right. The Grengiols tulip is only found in Grengiols and basically blooms around mid-May. This place is one of my absolute favorites and biggest insider tips in Switzerland.
Places to visit in Western Switzerland
81. Montreux
Welcome to Montreux, the Swiss town where, thanks to its infinite beauty, countless writers and poets have stayed. Tourists from all over the world come to Montreux, among other things to see the Chillon Castle. But also a trip by train from Montreux to the Rochers-de-Naye to enjoy the view of Lake Geneva is worthwhile.
Montreux tip: For over 50 years, Montreux has also been internationally known for the Montreux Jazz Festival. It takes place every year in summer.
Insider tip Montreux: The daffodils of Montreux – here everyone starts to dream. The daffodil fields above Montreux at Les Avants are the perfect place to relax and enjoy the moment. It is recommended to arrive by train, as there is only limited parking available
82. Geneva
The cosmopolitan city of Geneva is with Zurich, the most famous city in Switzerland. With the Jet d’Eau, the lakeside paths on Lake Geneva, the many restaurants and famous luxury hotels, Geneva has much to offer.
Those who make a day trip to Geneva, have so much to experience at that place: The headquarters of the UN and the International Red Cross, many parks, walking in the alleys or swimming in the lake are just a few of the many things you can do in Geneva. But a tip is also a boat trip on the infinitely long Lake Geneva. I have already driven from Geneva to Nyon and can highly recommend it.
83. Nyon
Nyon is a medieval town on Lake Geneva. If you arrive from the German-speaking part of Switzerland, you can clearly feel the French pulse of this place and you might think you are somewhere abroad on vacation. But it is a trip in Switzerland, which once again shows the diversity of our country. Nyon Castle, which towers proudly over the lake, was built by the Romans as early as the 13th century.
Tip Nyon: In summer, the Paleo Festival takes place, where a total of over 230,000 people dance for 6 days to the music of famous stars.
84. Areuse gorge
The Areuse Gorge with its unique stone bridge is one of the sights of Switzerland. It is easily accessible in only 45 minutes from Noirague or 20 minutes from Champ-du-Moulin. I am not the only one who is fascinated by the beauty of the Areuse Gorge above Lake Neuchâtel, Jean Jaque Rousseau also loved the region and built a house near Champ-du-Moulin.
Insider tip Areuse Gorge: In only 2.5 hours you hike from the Areuse Gorge to the Creux du Vans. On the hike, you’ll pass a fountain that bubbles out 4 degree cold water all year round, no matter if it’s summer or winter. Why? It is water from the melting of the permafrost. An ideal refreshment in summer before tackling the last steep section up the Creux du Vans.
85. Creux du Van
Meanwhile, the arch of the Creux du Van is known throughout Switzerland. During the summer vacations and weekends, it is a very popular destination and people flock up en masse. That’s why I recommend to visit the place in spring or fall. The Creux du Van is famous for its cliff arch, about 4 kilometers long, which strongly reminds of the Grand Canyon. That’s also reason the reason why it is called the Grand Canyon of Switzerland.
Insider tip Creux du Vans: At Creux du Van there are wild ibexes! Because of the many people they are not shy anymore. So the chances to see an ibex here are huge. Please keep respect for the animals and always enough distance, do not feed them and never leave the paths. The ibexes need their rest too.
86. Saut du Doubs
The waterfall on the Doubs plunges 27 meters into the depths. You can watch the spectacle from two viewing platforms. The Saut du Doubs is a place of power. It is easily accessible by boat from Les Brenets in summer. If the boat sails, you can expect large crowds. For those who like to hike, I recommend not to arrive in the summer vacations and to do the 1.5 hour hike (one way). By the way, on the other side is already France. The Doubs is right on the border with our neighboring country.
87. Estavayer-le-Lac
Vacation at Lake Neuchâtel? The first thing that comes to mind is Estavayer-le-Lac, which is the most famous place on the largest lake in Switzerland. Surely many of you have been camping as a child or have visited Estavayer as a day trip. The great thing about this Swiss town is that you can not only swim in Lake Neuchâtel, but also stroll through the medieval town with French flair. Hearty bakeries and restaurants invite you to linger.
88. Gruyères
Gruyères is one of the most famous and beautiful towns in Switzerland. Built in the Middle Ages by the Burgundians, the place is a must for all culture lovers and tourists. Besides the town, you can also visit the Gruyere cheese factory with show dairy or the Caillier chocolate museum in Broc.
Tip Gruyères: The region around Gruyères is perfect for a day trip in Switzerland! Besides the medieval town of Gruyere, the show dairy and the chocolate museum, there is a beautiful hike through an impressive gorge: the Gorges de La Jogne. From Charmey you hike along the Lac de Montalvens through the gorge (good shoes are recommended, it might be slippery even in summer) and either end up in Broc or continue hiking to Gruyères.
89. Epesses
One of the most beautiful places on Lake Geneva is Epesses. In Epesses you are in the wine paradise of Les Lavaux, which is a Unesco World Heritage Site. Here you can taste fine Swiss wines in the various wine cellars or enjoy the best view of Les Lavaux.
The wine hike from St.Saphorin to Epesses is especially in summer and during the grape yield a highlight.
90. Les Lavaux
The wine terraces of Les Lavaux are a Unesco World Heritage Site and with 800 hectares the largest contiguous vineyards in Switzerland, which would be a total of 1120 football fields. In many wine cellars you can taste the local wines, go for hour-long dream hikes or take with the Lavaux Express a leisurely ride through the wine region.
91. Chateau de Chillon
The Chateau de Chillion is by far the most famous castle in Switzerland. Over 400,000 tourists flock to touristy place in Western Switzerland every year. The castle was not only owned by the French, the Bernese also conquered the castle and used it as a prison. Only since 1798 it belongs to the canton of Vaud. Fun Fact: Although the castle became known as a tourist destination in the 18th century due to its beauty, it was still a prison.
Places to visit in Ticino (Italian speaking Switzerland)
92. Valle Verzasca
The Verzasca Valley in Ticino is a stunning valley above Locarno and along with the Maggia Valley one of the most famous valleys in Ticino. Media coverage has reached the Verzasca Valley in Italy, where it was hyped as the Maldives of Europe. Besides the famous Lavertezzo and the stone arch bridge Ponte dei Salti, a hike along the Verzasca to Sonogno is worthwhile.
Insider tip Verzasca: The Verzasca Valley is a wonderful place for every hiker. Although there are many people along the main street in summer, in the side valleys you are far away from tourism. A great hike is the path from Lavertezzo to Revöira, where old Ticino stone houses are waiting for you.
93. Foroglio – a place built with stone houses
Along with Lavertezzo in the Verzasca Valley, Foroglio in the Maggia Valley is one of the most photographed places in Ticino. For good reason. The beautiful village of stone houses and the imposing waterfall far back in the Maggia Valley is hard to beat in terms of idyll and romance. Especially in summer, many Swiss and tourists already flock there. Why are there so many stone houses in Foroglio? Stones were chosen because they are the most abundant resource in the back part of the Maggia Valley.
From Locarno you can reach Foroglio in about 40 minutes, from Lugano it takes almost 1.5 hours.
Insider tip Foroglio: You can get delicious Ticino food at the restaurant la Froda, but the little village itself is quickly seen. However, there is still so much to explore in the Maggia Valley. In the other side valley called Val Lavizzara you will find the pretty village of Fusio. Further up, you can visit the Lago del Sambuco reservoir or even take a breathtaking hike to the Alpe Cristallina area.
94. Lugano
Vacation in Lugano? This is a good choice! Yes, Lugano is a southern city to stay, to indulge in delicious food in the various restaurants or to enjoy wellness. Lugano is famous for its local mountains Monte Brè and San Salvatore. Especially from Monte Brè I love the view!
Insider tip Lugano: An insider tip for a great place to visit from Lugano is Gandria, which is located just before the Italian border. A few of the houses were already built in the 16th century. With a beautiful boat ride from Lugano you can reach Gandria in about an hour and goes all year round.
95. Locarno
Located at the foot of the Maggia and Verzasca valleys, Locarno is the ideal city to discover in the italian speaking part of Switzerland. But not only that. Locarno also has a Monte Brè with just as beautiful a view as Lugano. The place is also famous for the Locarno Film Festival and the Piazza Grande.
Tip Locarno: From Locarno or Ascona you can reach the Brissago Islands within a short time by boat. An island paradise almost like in the Mediterranean Sea but in Switzerland. The small island even houses a hotel and a botanical garden!
96. Lago di Ritom
As an environmental scientist ETHZ, I am very familiar with the region around Lake Ritom in Ticino. After a hike of about one hour, one reaches the Val Piora, where there is also a modern SAC hut. Directly nearby is the Lago di Cadagno, one of the few sulfur lakes in Switzerland. But also otherwise the area is beautiful, you have more than 10 lakes and an incredible mountain panorama for yourself.
Insider tip Lago di Ritom: An insider tip is a hike in the early morning hours on the ridge of Lago di Dentro. You will experience a breathtaking sunrise with a view of Lake Ritom, Lago di Cadagno and the Ticino mountains.

98. Medieval town Zug with walk on Zugerberg mountain
Only 30 minutes from Zurich, you will find the medieval town of Zug. Zug was founded in the 13th century. Although Zug and the whole canton is known for its low taxes, the city definitely has more to offer. For example, the neat old town is a place worth seeing. Especially the 52 meter high Zytturm will catch your eye. The great thing is that every historic house has a plaque where you can read about the history of the house.
Do you want to go swimming or just stroll in a beautiful place? Then Lake Zug is the perfect destination. The view of the Rigi mountain always makes me dream. Lake Zug is another Swiss lake named after a major city, along with Lake Neuchâtel, Lake Zurich and Lake Geneva.
Tip Zug: In less than 30 minutes you can reach Zug’s local mountain: the Zugerberg. A funicular takes you from Schönegg up about 400 meters in altitude. So, especially in winter, there may well be a lot of snow on the Zugerberg, while in the city of Zug itself, there is no sign of winter. As an insider tip we recommend is a panoramic hike from Zugerberg to Walchwil. Again and again you will be rewarded with a fantastic view of Lake Zug, Lake Lucerne and the Rigi.

The “Lungerersee” or “Lungernsee“, named after the village of Lungern, is one of Switzerland’s Instagram hotspots. Along with Zermatt, Seealpsee, Ebenalp, Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen, this is probably the most shared and the most popular lake in Switzerland. Lake Lunger is a reservoir, however, interesting is the fact that Lake Lungern was once a natural lake. Yes it was even lowered to gain additional land for farmers. But only 100 years later in 1921 the artificial reservoir was created – and the laboriously won land was lost again in the masses of water.
Insider tip Lungerersee: Near the cable car station at Lungern is a place called Dundelbach Falls. A beautiful waterfall and hidden gem you shouldn’t not miss. You can easily park your car at the cable car station and walk for around 10 minutes to the falls.

Another great option in Linthal valley is Braunwald, which is easily accessible by funicular. Braunwald positions itself as a family destination in Switzerland. However, the village is also known as a health resort. In the past, whey cures were offered, but today Braunwald is known for wellness as well. Like Zermatt, Mürren or Wengen this place is completely car-free.

The Rigi was known early on for bathing cures, pilgrimages and educational trips. As early as 1540, the cold bath spring with its sacred effect was mentioned for the first time. The pilgrimage chapel Maria always attracted many pilgrims. In addition, Goethe was so enthusiastic about the Rigi that the panoramic view kept him busy for years to come. After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the number of visitors to Rigi increased. However, mass tourism did not yet prevail. It was mainly aristocratic and upper middle-class nature lovers, writers, artists, professors and students who traveled there. The Rigi panorama map was the first ever published panorama map.
Rigi Scheidegg can be reached comfortably by cable car on the way to Gschend or Kräbel. A hike to Rigi Kaltbad or Rigi Staffel is very worthwhile.

Camping at the Klöntalersee is also very popular during the summer and vacation months.
In the past, ice was mined at Klöntalersee in winter and shipped to Basel, Zurich, Frankfurt, Marseille, Cologne and even Paris. There, hospitals and beer warehouses were cooled.

In a leisurely hike you surround lake Bannalpsee by hiking right at the beginning on the right side of the lake and reach the mountain guesthouse Urnerstafel in about 45 minutes. The Bannalpsee is a reservoir that was built between 1935 and 1937. It is interesting that the construction of the reservoir caused a huge resistance among the population. Yes the population split into two camps. Proponents and opponents. There was even the talk of a “Bannalp war”. Today it is a paradise for family excursions and those seeking peace and quiet.
- Sisikon
Sisikon is a gem at Lake Lucerne. The area can hardly be surpassed in terms of diversity. Whether a picnic at the lakeside promenade, enjoying the view or starting a Lake Lucerne cruise. The village makes everyone’s heart beat faster. For me, Sisikon is especially a great starting point for hikes. For example, the high-altitude hike to Morschach or a trip to Tellsplatte.

Andermatt, known to most by Egyptian investor Samis Sawiris, is the ideal residence for skiing vacations in winter or hiking in summer. Not only the short journey of only one hour from Zurich, but also the mountain panorama are a highlight. The Wägitalersee is considered by connoisseurs as one of the most beautiful Swiss lakes. 117. Wildenstein Castle – a place for castle lovers
Wildenstein Castle, which is over 700 years old, is a dream for castle romantics because it is the only preserved high castle in Baselbiet. A beautiful hike leads from Bubendorf over the Murenberg to Wildenstein Castle. On the Wildenstein there is a nature reserve where over 500 year old oaks as well as wild orchids can be found. Especially in spring this place is a natural spectacle.

Insider tip Wildenstein Castle: Not far from Wildenstein Castle there is the Sormattfall, one of the biggest insider tips in Switzerland regarding waterfalls. It falls down on two steps and is especially worth seeing after the rain or snowmelt.
118. Oltingen
I’m particularly fond of Oltingen in the canton of Basel. In this village, you would think the clock had stopped. Farmhouse after farmhouse stands in a row. But insiders know that almost all of the more than 60 farmers who ran farms 50 years ago have given up. It is simply no longer worthwhile. Nevertheless, Oltingen is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Northern Switzerland.
What I particularly like is the unique Baselbieter farm building style: a residential house is complemented by a stable, which is recognizable with its large round-arched door.
Insider tip Oltingen: In spring, when the cherries are in bloom, Oltingen is the insider tip for a beautiful cherry blossom hike. Eventhough Frick in particular known for this spectacle, these paths are normally very crowded due to social media.
119. Chellenchöpfli
The highest mountain in the Basel area is the Chellenchöpfli while a gigantic view of the Jura awaits you. You can park at the Waldweid or take the Wasserfallen cable car up the mountain. Having grown up in the Basel region, I have many fond memories with this city. Therefore, I highly recommend visiting Basel at least once in your lifetime. Especially worthwhile are the walks through the hidden alleys of Basel. But also the Rhine swimming in summer (a possible entry point for Rhine swimming is the Tinguely Museum), where you can let yourself float in the river for about 30 minutes, is a real highlight. Enjoying and relaxing on the banks of the Rhine is also something that the people of Basel love to do and you will certainly enjoy it too. It’s especially nice on the Kleinbasel side, where you have a permanent view of Basel’s old town.
Insider tip Basel: The Landesstelle Basel is the insider tip in Basel, or at least it’s used to be. Here you can choose great drinks and food in bars and restaurants, while enjoying the view of the Rhine in the sunshine. From here you can even walk to the border triangle of Switzerland, Germany and France.
- Sormattfall Bubendorf
There are many impressive waterfalls in Switzerland. The fact that there is one in Baselland seems to surprise many. But this place of power is very special. Especially in spring with the wild garlic or after the rain, the waterfall is an unforgettable highlight. You can combine the excursion well with the castle Wildenstein.
